Tree Topping Not Recommended
/
Mary Helen Ferguson
If a person desires to reduce the overall size of a tree, we recommend using a technique called "heading" or "crown reduction."
Rather than making cuts at arbitary places in the middle of large limbs, we recommend cutting limbs back to just in front of where another limb (a lateral) emerges, with the remaining limb being at least one-half as large in diameter as the one being cut.
If you would like more information about pruning, you can check out this website: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-8602.html
